Sole Junkie aka Steven Cedre Jr. (°1974, United States) is an artist who mainly works with both acrylic and oil paints.
In a search for new methods to ‘read the city’, Junkie touches various overlapping themes and strategies. Several recurring subject matter can be recognised, such as the relation with popular culture and media, working with repetition, provocation and the investigation of the process of expectations.
His paintings are often about contact with architecture, inanimate objects and basic elements of mark making. Energy (heat, light, water), space and landscape are examined in less obvious ways and sometimes developed in absurd ways. By using popular themes such as family, satire, social commentary, urban living and graffiti, he focuses on the idea of pop and mass culture. Using written and drawn symbols, a world where light-heartedness rules and where rules are undermined is created.
His works demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of leaving ‘your mark’ on a local or global cultural level.
